About the Company

The Outback Steakhouse was founded in Tampa, Florida on March 23, 1988 by Bob Basham and Chris Sullivan. The original restaurant is still open today at the corner of West Kennedy Boulevard and Gunn Highway in Tampa, FL.

The idea for the name came from an Australian customer who commented that "Outback" means "a very remote place." This phrase aptly described their philosophy about no frills dining with fresh ingredients. The first Outbacks were true to those words as they only offered a limited menu consisting of four items: steak, chicken, shrimp or ribs. Today there are over 150 different dishes on the menu including salads and desserts as well as several beer selections from around Australia. And while it may not be a truly remote place, the restaurant has several locations throughout the US.

Outback Steakhouse is well known for its "Bloomin' Onion." This crisp baked onion appetizer with a side of spicy dipping sauce was named after the Outback's founding chef, Tim Gannon. The dish was inspired by an Australian friend who would think nothing of showing up at a party with a full-on grilled onion to share.

In 2014, Outback Steakhouse became the title sponsor of the Florida State Fair's southern flounder fishing rodeo held in Tampa Bay, Florida. The first year of sponsorship brought in record crowds and revenue to the fairgrounds.

Outback Steakhouse is an Australian themed restaurant that was founded in 1988. The restaurant specializes in American cuisine and offers such things as baby back ribs, prime rib, steak and other popular items on their menu. Outback Steakhouse has more than 1,000 restaurants worldwide with plans to continue expanding over the years. The company's most recent annual revenue in 2017 was $2.5 billion.
